  1. I think, here in India, the problem is partly to do with the salaries teachers get. Teaching is a challenging job, which requires knowledge of the subject as well as how to communicate effectively. There are poor quality teachers because there is not enough competition in the profession. And there is not enough competition for teaching jobs, simply because it does not pay well.
I see that changing very slowly, in certain sections of the teaching profession. But mostly, a school teacher, is still underpaid.

    1. Thank you for your input. In Australia there is a lot of comment about falling literacy and numeracy levels, changes in curriculum etc but we are not always able to attract the higher level students to the teaching courses. Whilst I understand that teaching is a vocation and there has to be a high level of dedication to the art, I also think that we need to make sure that our teachers have sufficient academic ability as well. Top ranking classroom teachers in Queensland earn about $85000 pa., I understand but it takes a minimum of ten years to be earning at that level.

  2. It’s absolutely essential that we have the best teachers teaching our kids. And it’s not about tenure. It’s about knowing the material, having excellent lesson plans, good communication skills, and a genuine caring about the students.
